The collaboration between Tourism Vocational Schools and Vocational Colleges is an effort to update the functions, curriculum, facilities, management and quality of education at Vocational Schools. DESMA Center facilitates Visitation andTraining of Trainers (TOT) Pedagogical Skills of Sumba Tourism Vocational School Teachers at Poltekpar NHI Bandung, on 7-9 November 2023.

There were 10 participants from SMKS Bakti Luhur, SMKS Pancasila Tambolaka, SMKN 2 Kota Tambolaka, SMKS Efata Omba Rade, SMKN 1 Waikabubak (1 principal and 1 productive teacher from each school).

This activity was opened by Mr. Erfin Roesfian, S.Sos., M.Hum., CHE., Deputy Director III Poltekpar NHI Bandung; Mr Dicky Mardyan, S.SST. Par., Co-Founder & Director of DESMA Center and Mrs. Yohana Landa, S.Pd., M.PdK., Principal of SMKN 1 Waikabubak.

Also present were Mr. Marsianus Raga, SST.Par, MM.Par., Lecturer Representative at Poltekpar NHI Bandung from NTT; Mrs. Siti Yulia Irani Nugraha, MM.Par., Housekeeping Lecturer/Secretary of the Hospitality Department, Poltekpar NHI Bandung; Mrs. Cucu Kurniati, MM.Par., CHE., Lecturer in Travel Business at NHI Bandung Poltekpar; and Mrs. Ratih Pitria Purnamasari, S.ST.Par., MM.Par., Lecturer in Cooking at NHI Bandung Poltekpar.

Productive teachers and principals of vocational schools assisted by the DESMA Center had the opportunity to observe practical and theoretical learning methods at the NHI Bandung Poltekpar. The activities carried out include campus orientation, explanation of learning methodsProblem Based Learning (PBL), and interactive discussions. Participants were also invited to see teaching techniques through observations of Travel Business classes (airline ticket reservations, digitalization of tourism products) and Hospitality (making bed, laundry, mopping the floor, kitchen, andtable manner) and share experiences with NHI Bandung Poltekpar students who come from East Nusa Tenggara.

Through this activity, it is hoped that the quality of teaching in the tourism sector will improve so that teachers get good, appropriate and interesting teaching methods for the learning of Tourism Vocational School students. This is expected to answer industry demands, ensuring that vocational school students are ready to face the world of work with relevant skills.

Visitation &Training of Trainers The Pedagogical Skills of Sumba Tourism Vocational School Teachers at the NHI Bandung Poltekpar are part of Program TVET for Sustainable Tourism Development in Sumba which is implemented by the DESMA Center.

The TVET for Sustainable Tourism Development in Sumba program is supported by MISEREOR/KZE; implemented by the DESMA Center. Strengthening the Capacity of Tourism Human Resources aims to realize "a tourism vocational school education program in Sumba to meet the needs and requirements of the tourism industry, thereby offering better job opportunities for young people and supporting sustainable tourism in Sumba."

This program includes strengthening (1) Management capacity of tourism vocational schools in line with the independent curriculum and the concept of sustainable tourism; (2) Teacher capacity in pedagogical knowledge, about teaching and sustainable tourism (3) Tourism Vocational School-Tourism Industry Partnership; and (4) Students' entrepreneurial capacity in creating a sustainable tourism business.

The direct beneficiaries of this program are (1) Pancasila Vocational School – Tambolaka, Southwest Sumba; (2) SMK Negeri 2 Tambolaka City, Southwest Sumba; (3) Bakti Luhur Vocational School – Tambolaka, Southwest Sumba; (4) Efata Vocational School - Omba Rade, Southwest Sumba; and (5) Waikabubak State Vocational School 1, West Sumba. The direct partners of this program are (1) East Nusa Tenggara Province Education & Culture Office; (2) Southwest Sumba Regency Government; (3) West Sumba Regency Government; (4) Southwest Sumba Regency Tourism Office; and (5) West Sumba Regency Tourism Office.
