Sumba Ecobiz Challenge 2025: Youth Creative Tourism Entrepreneurship Ideas

The Sumba Ecobiz Challenge 2025 is an entrepreneurship training and competition event for Sumba’s youth generation. The final presentation of the Sumba Ecobiz Challenge 2025 took place at Pasola Hall, Sinar Tambolaka Hotel, on June 8–9, 2025. Organized by the DESMA Center, the event successfully brought together 10 finalist teams from various schools in West Sumba and Southwest Sumba to present creative business ideas based on sustainable tourism. "This competition is proof that the young generation of Sumba is full of brilliant ideas that highlight local wisdom," said Boyke Hutapea, Program Manager of the DESMA Center, during the event’s opening.

"We are very enthusiastic to support this event as it aligns with our commitment to youth MSME development," said a representative from Bank NTT. The first day of the event featured a technical meeting, submission of presentation materials, and a welcome dinner that served as a networking opportunity for participants, accompanying teachers, and mentors.

The highlight of the second day was the presentation of the 10 finalist teams, judged by a panel of experts in business and tourism. The Sumba Ecobiz Challenge jury consisted of Ayu Munandar Alam, Miss Tourism Sumba 2021; Roy Risaldy Ely, Chairperson of HIPMI BPC Sumba 2025–2028; Carla R.G. Peku, Micro Business Analyst at Bank NTT; and Boyke Hutapea, Program Manager at DESMA Center. “I was impressed by the innovative approaches presented by the participants, especially in how they blended modern business concepts with Sumbanese cultural values,” said Ayu Munandar Alam. Roy Risaldy Ely added, “They’re not just thinking about profit, but also about social and environmental impact.”

After a rigorous judging process, six outstanding teams were awarded for their achievements. Eco Art Print from SMKN 1 Waikabubak was crowned 1st Place Winner with its concept of eco-friendly print art inspired by traditional Sumbanese motifs. “We want to preserve our culture through products that carry economic value,” said a proud representative of the team. Sumba Nomadic Campervan from SMA Katolik Sint John secured 2nd Place with their concept of sustainable adventure tourism, while Gelang Gading dari Kayu from SMA Karanu Waikabubak took 3rd Place with their handcrafted accessories made from distinctive Sumbanese wood.

Equally impressive, three additional teams were awarded consolation prizes. Cosmic Dream from SMKN 2 Loli earned 1st Consolation Prize with their concept of astronomy tourism, while Moringa Delight from SMK Bakti Luhur Tambolaka offered processed moringa products, winning 2nd Consolation Prize. “We utilize local plants that are highly nutritious,” said a representative of the team. The 3rd Consolation Prize went to Kabocha Crunch, also from SMK Bakti Luhur Tambolaka, for their innovative snacks made from Sumbanese pumpkin.

The winners not only received trophies and certificates, but also business development support from partner organizations. “We will use this cash prize to start production more seriously,” said one of the winners. Bank NTT, represented by Carla R.G. Peku Jawang, expressed its commitment: “We are ready to provide financial guidance and access to capital to help them grow their businesses.”

The event concluded with a strong commitment to continued mentorship and support. “This is just the beginning. We will collaborate with schools and industry partners to bring these ideas to life,” emphasized Boyke Hutapea. The DESMA Center plans to establish partnerships with various stakeholders, including HIPMI and the Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KADIN) of Southwest Sumba, to ensure the sustainability of these projects.

The Sumba Ecobiz Challenge 2025 has proven that Sumba is not only rich in culture but also in creative and innovative human resources. “We are proud to be part of this event and hope to return next year with even more participants,” concluded Boyke Hutapea. Through collaboration between students, schools, businesses, and financial institutions, Sumba is moving toward a brighter future — one shaped by competitive and sustainable young entrepreneurs.
